Founded on 21 April 1986 by Gabriel Caillet, mayor of the 4th arrondissement of Lyon, and twinned with the vineyard of Montmartre, the République des Canuts, now chaired by Gérard Truchet, is committed to defending the traditions of Lyon and above all to promoting the Croix-Rousse district. The vineyard Clos des Canuts is located on the hill of Croix-Rousse, in the Parc de la Cerisaie. The grape harvest is an opportunity for great celebration, now traditional to the Croix-Rousse. Other events take place throughout the year, such as Brandons, Paradises and literary awards (Canut and Dessinandier).
The Canuts had a vine, a republic and a government on their hill. Since its creation, the Republic has defended the values of Lyon symbolized by the vines: with deep roots firmly connected to the terroir, they represent patience, tenacity and, with the juice they produce, conviviality. Three hundred vines of Gamay, each entrusted for three years to the care of a "godfather", a member elected by the President. Among the most illustrious ones, Mick Micheyl, Paul Bocuse, Frédéric Dard, Alphonse Boudard. The citizens then intervene during the harvest and the following festivities. The land produces from 300 to 600 kg of grapes per year and the wine obtained is served first to the godparents, in personalized and vintage bottles. It is a ruby red wine, with aromas of red fruit, consistent on the palate, easy to drink, dietary and with low cholesterol content.
