Located in the heart of Cleveland’s historic Hough neighborhood, just minutes from Downtown Cleveland and University Circle, The Vineyards and Winery at Château Hough is a standout model of urban agriculture, community transformation, and green innovation.
Established in 2010 by Neighborhood Solutions Inc., a nonprofit founded in 2004, Château Hough is a ¾-acre urban vineyard that reclaims previously vacant land for positive community impact. As Cleveland’s first urban vineyard and winery, it was part of a citywide initiative to repurpose underutilized urban spaces and now serves as a hub for job training, education, community events, and environmental sustainability.
Planted with 294 vines across 14 rows—half Frontenac (a cold-hardy red) and half Traminette (a crisp white)—the vineyard’s first harvest in 2013 produced a Traminette wine that earned second place at the 2014 Geauga County Fair. The wines, known for their bold and vibrant flavor profiles, reflect the vineyard’s high standards and distinctive terroir.
The vineyard’s development was a true community effort. Volunteers—children, adults, and residents from nearby halfway houses and shelters—contributed to everything from planting to trellis construction. Many participants, including individuals formerly involved in the justice system, have since found seasonal employment at Château Hough, gaining hands-on experience in viticulture, teamwork, and land stewardship.
Today, Château Hough welcomes visitors from around the world, including students and researchers exploring topics like urban farming, reentry programs, and community-based sustainability. The space also functions as a vibrant event venue—hosting everything from wine tastings and fundraisers to grape stomps and art shows.
As a living example of what’s possible when community, creativity, and social justice intersect, Château Hough continues to grow—cultivating not just vines, but hope, opportunity, and connection.
