Tapada de Ajuda

The vineyard of the Higher Institute of Agronomy (ISA) is located in the heart of Lisbon, on the Tapada da Ajuda campus—an historic and charming area that was once part of the royal hunting grounds. Situated in the western part of the city center, the vineyard overlooks the Tagus River, offering a unique and picturesque setting.

Surrounded by a vast botanical and environmental park of around 100 hectares, the vineyard is a true living laboratory, hosting projects in agriculture, forestry, and sustainability. Among the historic features in the area are century-old buildings dating back to 1917, a stone amphitheater, an exhibition pavilion, and an astronomical observatory.

The vineyard is mainly used for educational purposes and is an integral part of the undergraduate and PhD programs in Viticulture and Enology. Thanks to this educational role, the vineyard has become a key reference point for training students from around the world. ISA is also a pioneer in innovation for sustainable agriculture, collaborating with GreenLab@Lisbon to promote innovation in the agri-food and forestry sectors.

The vineyard produces table grapes and high-quality red and white wines, which are shared within the campus community. While not strictly marketed, these products represent a strong bond between research, territory, and tradition.

Open to the local community and visitors, the park is an ideal place for walks, events, and outdoor activities, offering a unique mix of nature and culture in an urban setting. Visitors can explore charming spots such as the Stone Amphitheater, the Belvedere, and the Astronomical Observatory, making Tapada da Ajuda a true hidden gem of Lisbon.
