Ljubljana Castle Vineyard Joins the U.V.A. Family

Perched above the rooftops of Ljubljana, the Castle Vineyard is one of those places that feels like it was always meant to exist. Planted in 2016 as a conscious act of revival, it brought back a tradition of viticulture that once defined the city’s relationship with wine, and did so in the same year Ljubljana was celebrated as the European Green Capital. With 1,050 vines of the local varieties Belpin and Rdečegrajc, tended by the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia, and a courtyard sheltering a descendant of the oldest grape vine in the world, this is a vineyard with a story worth telling.

Since 1987, Ljubljana has held the title of “City of Vine and Wine,” awarded by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) in Paris. It feels only natural that it now joins our family.

With Slovenia on board, the Urban Vineyard Association is proud to be present in 14 countries and counting.
