Founded on April 21, 1986, at the initiative of Gabriel Caillet, mayor of Lyon’s 4th arrondissement, and twinned with the Montmartre vineyard, the République des Canuts, now chaired by Gérard Truchet, is dedicated to defending Lyon’s traditions and, above all, to enhancing the Croix-Rousse district. The Clos des Canuts vineyard is located on the Croix-Rousse hill, in the Parc de la Cerisaie. The grape harvest is a festive occasion, now a tradition in Croix-Rousse. Other events take place throughout the year, such as the Brandons, the Paradis, and literary prizes (Canut and Dessinandier).
The Canuts had, on their hill, a vine, a republic, and a government. Since its creation, the Republic has upheld the values of Lyon that the vines symbolize: with deep roots firmly anchored in the terroir, they represent patience, tenacity, and—through the juice they produce—conviviality. Three hundred Gamay vines, each entrusted for three years to the care of a “godparent,” a member chosen by the President. Among the most illustrious: Mick Micheyl, Paul Bocuse, Frédéric Dard, Alphonse Boudard. Citizens then take part in the harvest and the following celebrations. The land produces between 300 and 600 kg of grapes per year, and the wine is served first to the godparents, in personalized vintage bottles. It is a ruby-colored wine, with red fruit aromas, full on the palate, easy to drink, light, and low in cholesterol.
