In Monte Blandinio is a historic vineyard located in the garden of Saint Peter’s Abbey in Ghent. Established in 1980, it is managed and maintained by the Ghent Wine Measurers’ Guild, a historic institution whose origins date back to the 14th century. In medieval Ghent, sworn wine measurers were responsible for ensuring the accurate measurement and declared quality of wine, operating within a guild structure that flourished between the 14th and 16th centuries.
Today, the Guild preserves this heritage through the cultivation of the vineyard in collaboration with the City of Ghent’s Green Services and the Ghent Hotel School. Depending on the harvest, In Monte Blandinio produces a still white wine and/or a traditional-method sparkling wine.
Rooted in a much older viticultural tradition documented as early as the 9th century, the vineyard continues the legacy of Saint Peter’s Abbey as an important historical center of wine production and trade. The Guild also maintains the historic devotion to Saint Martin, patron saint of wine professions, whose feast day on November 11 traditionally marked the completion of fermentation.
