The vineyards of San Michele in Isola, near the city cemetery, grow in the novices’ garden next to the Camaldolese monastery, which has been managed by Franciscan friars for the past two centuries.
The agreement with Veritas and the Municipality of Venice allows us to keep the vineyard and the ancient cellar functioning, which the Franciscans, with Father Andrea, had maintained until 2008. The vine rows, trained on pergolas along the garden paths, are planted with malvasia, dorona, and prosecco grapes. The name of the briny wine is In Vino Veritas, San Michele in Purezza: a mass wine.
The monastery cellar, designed by Codussi, consists of four spacious rooms and is equipped with ancient barrels and vats; it is the last remaining testimony to the tradition of winemaking in the Venetian lagoon.
The Laguna nel Bicchiere Association was born from the curiosity of Flavio Franceschet, who in 1993 discovered the lagoon vineyards, especially the garden-vineyard of San Francesco della Vigna on the island of Sant’Elena. He then began involving the students of the middle school where he taught in the exciting stages of winemaking, having them crush the grapes with their feet.
