The City Vineyard

Thessaloniki

thessaloniki_city-vineyard

In the spring of 2013, Thessaloniki was obtaining its Vineyard: the City was eventually getting its own urban viticulture space. The aromatic Malagouzia and the Golden Robola, the cosmopolitan Xinomavro and the seductive Agiorgitiko, were planted in an urban area, in a neighborhood where the Municipality's engineering workshop was previously located.

The spirit of the landscape, the inspiration, the vision and will of the people of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, the kind offer of the Ktima Gerovassiliou (famous wine company) added to the knowledge of the laboratory of viticulture of the Faculty of Agriculture of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), the passion of citizens and volunteers, created in a two-acres area the first urban biological vineyard in Greece.

The responsible Municipal service is the Directorate of Environment and Green Management and with the effort of all the above actors, keep vineyard alive. The vineyard turned out to be a meeting place for young and old, students and teachers, locals
and foreigners. It is dressed up with music, dances and songs like the whole neighborhood is setting up a table.

Our vineyard arose and bore fruit. Thanks to it, Gorgona the wine of our city stood and stands out every year. The produced wine is used in social dinners and charitable auction and all the proceeds are given to charity. Thus our Gorgona is delightful not just because it is the result of a beautiful effort but mainly because it is the result of a community effort.
