Michelangelo's Vineyard
Florence
In the heart of Florence, at the foot of the famous Piazzale Michelangelo, lies a small green oasis that encapsulates the history and tradition of Tuscan viticulture. The Vineyard of Michelangelo is a unique project, born from the desire of the Donne Fittipaldi company to create a true Vitarium, an urban garden-vineyard that celebrates biodiversity and sustainability. With 700 vines cultivated using the traditional bush training method, this vineyard hosts ancient native varieties such as Sangiovese, Foglia Tonda, Pugnitello, Colorino del Val d’Arno, and Canaiolo – all carefully selected to preserve the historical memory of Tuscan winemaking.
Perfectly integrated into its surroundings, the vineyard blends with olive trees, cypresses, and other Mediterranean essences, creating a natural haven for pollinators and migratory birds. In the future, trifolium pratense and trifolium incarnatum, plants particularly appreciated by bees, will also be planted to support local biodiversity.
This project also holds a deep emotional connection for Maria Fittipaldi Menarini, who wished to give continuity to the historic family estate and its old vineyard, which reminds her of her childhood. Cultivated with natural methods, the vineyard symbolizes a return to the ancient urban viticulture that has long been present in Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance.
An initiative that not only contributes to the preservation of endangered grape varieties but also highlights the vineyard's role as a key element for urban sustainability and the link between nature and the city.
