Clos du palais des Papes
Avignon
The only AOC intra-muros vineyard in France, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Clos de la Vigne at the Palais des Papes beautifully overlooks the historic city and the Rhone from the top of the Rocher des Doms
Owned by the city of Avignon, the vineyards have been taken over by the Compagnons des Côtes du Rhône since the planting of the first vines in 1997. Thanks to the support of many partners, they guarantee the maintenance and conservation of this plot all year round.
Strengthened by an unshakable commitment for over 20 years in the maintenance and conservation of the Clos de la Vigne of the Palais des Papes, the Compagnons des Côtes du Rhône replanted the vineyards and redeveloped the lot following subsequent waterproofing works that made it necessary uprooting.
Eager to forge close links between the northern and southern parts of the Côtes du Rhône, the Compagnons planted around 540 grape strains from both the north and south of the valley. This work was carried out with the support of the students of the Lycée Viticole d’Orange. A choice that allows you to respect the harmony of the Rhône vines but also to offer a unique chromatic and aromatic palette, a real educational showcase on the ground. The leitmotif of the Compagnons des Côtes du Rhône, culture has an essential place in each of the actions they conduct.
The Clos de la Vigne of the Palais des Papes, showcase of the Côtes du Rhône, thus becomes a real place for exchanges and meetings focused on the passion for the vine and wine in favor of the generations of tomorrow. Numerous winemakers and other professionals in the wine sector, young and old, French and foreign, simple curious or expert amateurs, will have access to various events throughout the year aimed at transmitting the know-how of the winemaker.
Future professionals of the wine sector can use the Clos du Palais des Papes vineyard as a support for their learning to practice the various tasks necessary for the management of the vineyard: introduction to the art of pruning, harvesting, tying, leaf removal, tillage. .
