Tapada de Ajuda
Lisbon
The vineyard of the Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA) is located in the heart of Lisbon, at the Tapada da Ajuda campus, a historic and fascinating area that was once part of the royal hunting grounds. Situated on the west side of the city center, the vineyard offers a unique and scenic view over the Tagus River.
Surrounded by a vast botanical and environmental park of around 100 hectares, the vineyard serves as a living laboratory, hosting projects that span agriculture, forestry, and sustainability. The area also houses historical assets, including buildings from 1917, a stone amphitheater, an exhibition pavilion, and an astronomical observatory.
The vineyard is primarily used for educational purposes, playing a central role in the undergraduate and doctoral courses in Viticulture and Enology. Thanks to its pedagogical focus, the vineyard has become a key location for training students from around the world. ISA is also a leader in agricultural innovation, collaborating with GreenLab@Lisbon to promote advancements in sustainable agriculture, forestry, and the food industry.
The vineyard produces high-quality table grapes, red and white wines, which are shared within the campus community. Although not strictly commercialized, these products reinforce the strong link between research, the territory, and tradition.
Open to the local community and visitors, the park is an ideal spot for walking tours, events, and outdoor activities, offering a unique blend of nature and culture in an urban setting. Visitors can discover charming spots such as the Stone Amphitheater, the Viewpoint, and the Astronomical Observatory, making Tapada da Ajuda a true hidden gem in Lisbon.
